As climate change continues to impact communities across British Columbia, the need for accessible, science-based air quality information has never been more urgent. Published annually by BC Lung Foundation in collaboration with its Air Quality and Health Steering Committee, the 2026 State of the Air report covers a variety of air quality and health topics relevant to British Columbians and provides a snapshot of key issues across the province. The State of the Air report highlights the growing health risks posed by wildfire smoke, extreme heat, and indoor air pollution, while showcasing innovative solutions that help people make informed decisions to protect their lung health.

The State of the Air Report includes highlights from this year’s Air Quality and Health workshop, which focused on wildfire smoke and how public health must adapt amidst our changing climate. Researchers from around the world presented compelling evidence, highlighted public health implications, and delivered practical approaches to our province’s most pressing air quality issues.
The report also emphasizes the importance of clear public communication, improved air quality alerts, and community-based monitoring initiatives that expand access to localized air quality information. It also highlights collaborative efforts by government, researchers, and community organizations to strengthen public health guidance, improve monitoring and forecasting, and build resilience in the face of increasing environmental challenges.
With support from incredible partners across BC’s government, education, and health sectors, the 2026 State of the Air report reinforces the need for coordinated, evidence-based action to better protect the health of British Columbians as climate-related air quality risks continue to grow.
