Climbing to success: Climb the Wall event raises almost $100,000 to support lung health

On Sunday, March 24th, firefighters from across British Columbia gathered to show their support for lung health at BC Lung Foundation’s annual Climb the Wall fundraising event. Over 180 firefighters took on the stairs at the Sheraton Vancouver Wall Centre, climbing to the 48th floor, many in full turnout gear, which can weigh over 50 pounds. The event also saw many non-firefighter participants join, including climbers of all ages; this year’s oldest climber was 78 years-old and youngest climber was 7 years-old.

Once descending from the 48th floor upon completing the challenge, participants were greeted by a team of volunteers to celebrate their success along with family, friends, and supporters. Participants and guests also took part in a glow-in-the-dark brunch featuring a DJ, circus performers, a 360-camera station, and lots of other entertainment.

To participate, registrants were asked to fundraise a minimum of $225, and this year’s event raised almost $100,000 to support BC Lung’s health initiatives. For the 2024 event, the funds will be dedicated to sending kids from across British Columbia to asthma camps. BC Lung’s Asthma Education Camps provide children with valuable knowledge and tools to manage their asthma effectively.

“We are so grateful to everyone who came out to fundraise and climb for BC Lung this year,” says Chris Lam, BC Lung President and CEO, “it’s incredible to see the ongoing dedication and community support for our health initiatives.”

Robyn Wilson climbed for the first time this year and was impressed with the energy and atmosphere of the event, “This year’s Climb the Wall event was incredible! Every detail was perfect, and the sense of community fostered by the BC Lung Foundation is inspiring. As a former asthma sufferer turned athlete, completing the climb was a testament to their unwavering support. One of the coolest aspects of Climb the Wall is the participation of the firefighting community. Watching firefighters scale the wall in full gear was awe-inspiring. Most of all, having my family there as part of the event made it even more special.” Robyn says she looks forward to participating again next year!

This year’s event sponsors included Sheraton Vancouver Wall Centre, Alkiss Water, Mail-O-Matic, Bell Media Group – Virgin Radio 94.5 FM, Move 103.5 and CTV, Matrix Production Services, F45 – Oak & Broadway, and Bar Athletics.
