Student Radon Skill Testing Contest

Radon is a radioactive gas that can linger inside your home, school or workplace. It can cause lung cancer.

The BC Lung Foundation and Interior Health are holding a Student Radon Skill Testing Contest, open to any students in Interior Health, from Grades 4 to 12. 

Here is a map you can use to find out if you live in the Interior Health region.

If you want test your home, there are free test kits available in some towns, or you can buy from us.

The Questions:

  1. How do you conduct a radon test? 
  2. How does radon enter a building?  
  3. Where are high levels of radon found in Canada?  
  4. What can be done to address high radon levels? 

Rules: 

  1. Open to all students whose primary residence is in the Interior Health region (e.g. students in public, independent, home schools, or other) from Grades 4 to 12.

  2. There are four posters, and each one contains a different skill testing question. Students may answer any of the questions (and even all of them). 

  3. Send one entry per question and send each entry as a separate email to healthyindoor@bclung.ca with Skill Contest in the subject line. In the body of the email please state your name, telephone number, grade, your school (or if you are homeschooled, the name and contact details of who teaches you) and which question you are answering. 

  4. Limit of one prize per person.  

  5. There will be separate contests for Grades 4 to 8 and 9 to 12  

  6. Contest closes March 31, 2024. 

  7. BC Lung Foundation staff will award prizes based on best answers. A further skill testing question may occur by telephone or video link.

  8. Prizes will include one of the following to winners (for both 4-8 and 9-12 streams) 

    1. First Prize: One Pair Beats Solo3 Wireless On-Ear Headphones

    2. Second Prize: One pair of wireless ear buds (Beats Studio Buds True Wireless Noise Cancelling Earbuds)

    3. Runners up: Alpha track radon test kit suitable for home radon testing, BC Lung promotional materials
